Students explore and study their local history
“The students of Primary Schools of the 3rd Educational Region of Chalkidiki explore and study their local history through the investigation of historical sources of their place of origin” 2018-2019
The main objective of the educational program was to promote local history through the detection, the study and the presentation of historical sources relating to the villages of Northeast Chalkidiki. In particular, the students, with the help of the teachers looked for evidence relating to the cultural history of their village through the study of historical sources, after first being trained by experts in the investigation of historical sources and the study of local history, as well as by conservators of archival-historical material. After completing the search and study of historical material from different institutions, they photographed it, digitized it and highlighted aspects of their local history. In addition, field research and interviews of people related to the students were carried out in order to investigate the relationships established with their hometown.
The common objectives of the pilot project are summarized below:
- To investigate the local history of their village and their school through historical-archival sources (photographs, documents, maps, correspondence, oral accounts…)
- To investigate and record information regarding the population of their village such as occupations, habits, places of origin, through historical sources.
- To explore the history of their school and to study the historical artifacts associated with student life in their village at the beginning of the century
- To establish a link between the place and their family history
- To collect oral testimonies – information through local cultural narratives
- To develop research skills relating to the collection and classification of archival material
- To use school records as educational material
The project concluded with an event at the cultural center of the Municipality of Aristotle in Ierissos on June 7th, 2018, where the presentation of all the activities carried out by the students during the school year took place.
In addition, a collective volume was published with all the activities of the school units that participated in the project (ISBN 978-618-5494-76-6).
