Students in the footsteps of the cultural heritage of the monasteries of Mount Athos
“The students of Primary Schools of the 3rd Educational Region of Chalkidiki in the footsteps of the cultural heritage of the monasteries of Mount Athos” 2017
The aim of the educational program for Mount Athos was to exploit the educational potential of the cultural heritage, art and architecture of the monasteries of Mount Athos. In particular, the students, with the help of the teachers who were first trained by archaeologists and monument conservators, explored the architecture of the monasteries through digital material and the internet, the building techniques, the conservation works that were carried out and those currently in progress. They also examined the materials and the conservation methods used by professional conservators, through experiential workshops, aspects and elements of Christian icons and frescoes in monasteries, with an emphasis on the way of painting.
The training sessions, which were organized for the participating teachers, focused on the presentation of Mount Athos as a world heritage site as designated by UNESCO, on the history and architecture of Mount Athos, on the conservation of frescoes and portable images and lastly, on the natural environment of Mount Athos and its impact on its rich cultural heritage.
The project concluded with an event at the cultural center of the Municipality of Aristotle in Ierissos on June 7th, 2017, where the presentation of all the activities carried out by the students during the school year took place. In addition, a collective volume was published with all the activities of the school units that participated in the project (ISBN 978-618-83717-0-5).
